Design 1927 Torea

This boat was heavily inspired by Irving Johnsons Yankee. See my earlier posting about Yankee. Torea was built by Abeking & Rasmussen of Germany of aluminum and launched in 1968. She is certainly a character boat but pretty and with a lot of usable space for a cruising yacht.

Here are the plans.

Whitesands Bay 15 08 10

After much discussion we decided to simply take a paddle out from Whitesands at the camp site and paddle around the bay. With another strong northerly wind our options were again limited. The tide was now flowing at full pace through Ramsey sound at spring tides so there was no chance of getting through. There was only four of us today, just a quick morning paddle before heading home.

We paddled south toward the top of Ramsey Sound before paddling back to the small rocks of carreg-gafeilliog.

There was a small race just between the rocks.

A bit further out from the rocks the tide was whipping up some massive waves as the water rushed out from the sound into the oncoming wind.

We had a little play with the small standing waves before paddling across the bay toward St Davids Head.

Paddling into the wind we rarely got above 1.5 to 2kts but with a bit of a following swell we made headway.

Landing at the stunning secluded beach of Porthmelgan we stop for a stretch.

I have previously noted this bay as a possible camp site on my map and I think I will definitely do that one day.

Paddling out from the bay we head back around toward Whitesands beach taking in some impressive caves on the way.

Unfortunately my camera battery died here but probably for the best, I get a bit trigger happy sometimes. We went into one cave only just wide enough to get a kayak in, but it went back miles. We slowly paddled in until it was too dark to see any more and we still didnt reach the end! Will have to come back with a torch.

Only a short trip to finish off the weekend before traveling home. A nice weekend in all, cheers everyone. Next the isle of Skye...

Fitting Out A Newly Built Boat

Fitting out a new boat can be difficult and very very expensive.I have known people to buy $20,000 boats and then drop another $50,000 to $60,000 on refits before they even touch water.Well my boat will cost around $3500 for the completed bare hull and cabin. See my post "Spira International 27 Foot Boat Plans Build Costs".Im looking at another $2,000 for paint, finish, and interior, and roughly $2,000 for powering the boat.So what about electronics. This is a difficult one to put a price on.The one system that you want to be all new is the waste, water, and plumbing system. This could give you tainted water, flood your boat, and/or make it stink like a sewer,if old equipment is used.Pumps maybe ok with a good cleaning, but tanks and piping need to be all new.

Understanding Boat Plumbing and Water Systems

First, how will the boat be used? For the first two or three years, the boat will be trailered to lakes and coastal areas.Eventually,it will be used to do "The Great Loop Cruise". Knowing how I will use the boat and when I may need to make upgrades helps a lot.I can resell my old equipment, when I upgrade, to recoup some cost.To do this, I will have to buy decent quality reliable products and maintain them in as new condition as possible.Ive rarely ever had problems taking care of things.

 The Great Circle Route

Second thing, the power plant.Jeff Spira, the designer of my boat, recommends an outboard for power.I have some issues that make outboards a bit of a challenge to use as a means of propulsion. My area has a strict ban on two stroke outboards. That leaves me trying to find a four stroke with controls and gauges.Four strokes are a relatively new thing and used set ups are still fetching top dollar.I cant afford to pay around $10,000 for a 90 horsepower four stroke outboard set up.After consulting with Jeff Spira,he has approved the use of a sterndrive. These are plentiful in my area and cheap, relatively speaking.A good complete four cylinder 140 horsepower 3.0L Mercruise set up goes for between $1500 and $3000.

Third thing,I have a plan to cut costs, get most of the stuff I need, and possibly make a little money back.I will buy a donor boat that is complete and running good.I can find sterndrive boats in good operating condition between $1000 and $6000.Some even have twin sterndrives. That would give me a few options.1)Sell the extra sterndrive set up. 2)Keep the extra sterndrive set up as a back up. 3)Clean up both sterndrive set ups, sell them, and buy a completely new set up.My choice would be the 140 horsepower diesel Volvo Penta D3-140 sterndrive set up.These are hard to find on the used market and most are damaged.New they start out around $12,000.A new 3.0L Mercruise sterndrive set up runs $6000 to $8000.On rare occasions, they can be had for around $5000 to $5500,but come with a catch. They must be set up by a factory Mercruise service center.

Stern Drive Manuals

The donor boat. This is tricky depending on location or region. Most boats here are bow riders or water sport boats. All tho,its not unusual to find cuddy or cabin cruisers for really good prices.Beware that a lot of boats are not properly maintained, and thats the reason they are for sell.Of course, one can get lucky at times and buy a boat that barely needs anything to be back on the water.Look for soft spots in the transom and floor. If they are soft then the stringers and flotation foam have been compromised, and the boats structure has been compromised. This is a good negotiating point. It is really expensive and labor intensive prospect to gut a hull for transom and stringer replacement.

What can be used from the donor boat? This depends on what boat is decided on to be the donor. When building a boat you need everything.

Heres what I look for in a donor.
Power Plant-must be running with all controls and gauges.
Electronics-VHF,depth sounder,radar,gps,etc... in operating conditon.
Pumps-Wash down,bilge,fresh water,black water,and grey water.
Electrical-Batteries,inverter,charger,genset,breaker panel,fuse panel,switches.
Windows-I plan to build my own to fit my boats design.
Bimini Top and canvas-It wont fit the boat, but it can be modified and save some money.Resell is an option.
Interior-Its hard to reuse interiors but they can be modified to work.
Thru Hulls-Pure preference, but I want bronze if theyre under water, and stainless steel above water.Plastic ones crack and fail.
Anchor,Rode,Bow Pulpit, and Windlass-These can usually be modified to work.
Heads(Toilet)-These things are a pain,save yourself the headache,buy new.
Sinks,Faucets,Showers-If these are in good condition,I will use them.I prefer stainless steel.
Tanks and Plumbing-All new. This was discussed earlier in this post.
Cabinets-These can be modified to work.
Hatches and Vents-These can usually be reused as is.
Swim Platforms and Ladders-Modified they can work.New they are outrageously priced.
Air condition unit(s)-These can be reused without much change.Good insulation can help keep the cool in.
Heaters-These can be reused without much change.

There is other items that can be reused but this is the most common expensive items.Anything that isnt used can fetch good money on Ebay or Craigs list.

RVs,motor homes, travel trailers can provide some good stuff also.I wouldnt use parts from them on a full time cruiser.A weekend cruiser should be fine. However, nothing will be USCG or AYBC approved.

More about M65 Design 2759

Last week we posted a couple of computer renderings of the new M65 from Morris Yachts. After reading some comments on Sailing Anarchy (yes we read it too), there seem to be some question regarding headroom with the flush deck and freeboard. Fair enough. We are hopeful this image will help. It shows a section through the deckhouse portion (this area is up two risers) and a section through a low point of the flush deck portion. There is full standing headroom throughout the boat.

And finally we show her next to a dock which I believe shows the boat has a low freeboard. Thats a 6 man show in the drawing. Well post an inboard profile when it becomes available.

Sprit Rig Virtues and Details

Of my published designs, two of the most popular (Phoenix III and First Mate) make use of a sprit rig with a small jib set flying. You can read some of my comments about the rig in this post from May 2012.

Phoenix III showing-off her sprit rig and flying jib
Despite the simplicity and effectiveness of this rig, I receive a large number of enquiries about the details of setting and reefing, and it appears to me that many people are unsure of how to benefit from its virtues. This is a real pity, because the sprit rig can set a very large sail area from a very short mast, and is a rig which is ideally suited to small boat cruising. In addition, if set properly, it is a good sail for windward work.

Phoenix III tacking away from a Pooduck Skiff in a battle to get up-wind
For me, one of the great joys associated with small craft is experimentation with rig variations, and learning how to make rigs which use an absolute minimum of store-bought fittings. There are plenty of old books about traditional seamanship around, and time spent learning is a good investment.

Below is an except from Phil Bolgers book, 100 Small Boat Rigs (Copyright 1984 International Marine Publishing ISBN 0-87742-182-X)

Back to the 17th century. What Ive said about spritsails in Rig 23 applies. By adding a jib to the basic boomless spritsail, some extra area is added in an efficient form, without any multiplication or lengthening of the few short spars. The jib is a good airfoil in its own right, and the draft off it improves the drive of the mainsail. The position of the jib is perfect for a leading-edge device. The spritsail is prone to twist on account of the difficulty of keeping the peak up tight. But the jib compensates for the twist to some extent. Taking the jib off doesnt affect the balance of the rig as much as might be thought. If its sheeted correctly, 10 or 12 degrees out from the centerline, the pull of the sheet tends to swing the bow into the wind. The forward position of the sail has a surprisingly small tendency to knock her bow off the wind. By the same token, if you want to make a boat weathercock downwind, as in a broken-down powerboat that wont steer if she gets broadside to the wind, a loose-footed staysail is not the best sail to make her do it.

This is one of the few sloop rigs that can be weatherly without backstays or standing rigging of any sort. The spritsails mast is so short that it can be built very stiff without its weight overpowering the boat. With the sloop rig the mast is stepped farther aft than in a cat, so the weight of a heavy mast does still less harm.

Moreover, the head of a spritsail is in tension, even when it isnt set up as hard as it should be, and that holds the masthead. The peak halyard of a gaff sail has the same effect, but its not as powerful because theres less trouble keeping a gaff sail properly peaked: the angle of the halyard to the top of the taller mast of the gaff sail works at a better mechanical advantage. The halyard is also slipping on a sheave, with the vector of its force dividing the angle of the standing part and the fall, while the throat of a spritsail can be lashed, or even shackled, solidly in place.

Of course any cantilevered mast has some give. A big boat with this rig would need something by way of a backstay to get the most drive out of the close-hauled jib. In the 15-footer cartooned, with a 13 1/2-foot mast and sprit, and a jib of 18 square feet, the backstay isnt crucial. The rig is auxiliary to the oars, and since it is a spritsail, the spars can not only be stowed in the boat, but stowed out to the sides to be out of the way of the oarsmen. This is the most powerful and weatherly rig that can meet that specification. The fact that its a cheap rig, easily built, strong and reliable, easy to maintain, and readily repaired with makeshift material, is an incidental bonus.

For those of you who would like to learn more about the rigging and versatility of a spritsail, there are three exceptionally good illustrated articles available in back issues of Woodenboat Magazine  #89 and #165.  The magazines are available as instant digital downloads for only a few dollars each, and I recommend them to you. The boat is designed as first and foremost a power vessel. The sails are primarily used for steadying purposes. I believe the pole shown on the sail plan is for a "flopper stopper". She was built by the Freeport Point Shipyard of Long Island and launched in 1948.

Capsizing Big Sailboats

The article about our January capsize in the Cape to Rio Race is now in print in Professional Boatbuilder magazine. It is also available in digital form to print subscribers. This publication is free but is only available to members of the boating industry. Click to see the contents of the current issue.
Graphic from Professional Boatbuilder magazine of the start of the capsize.
In retrospect, the thing that amazes me most about this event is this. I was upright, walking through the boat at the time, heading for the cockpit. I was unaware that we were being capsized until the cabin roof hit the water at the bottom of the wave, with the boat well rotated toward upside-down. It happened very fast, with the boat moving through an arc that must have applied large centrifugal forces, enough for me to be well past horizontal and still walking on the cabin sole. Everything else in the boat stayed in place through that process as well, only becoming dislodged when we impacted the bottom of the wave.

Those who dont have access to the magazine can read about our capsize in my January posts on this blog.

Over The Hump

Its become something of a joke between Helena and me. More times than I want to remember, Ive marched triumphantly up the stairs from my basement workshop and announced, "Im over the hump! Ive just finished what must be the hardest part of building this boat. Its all down hill from here! Yahoo!"

I said it when I finished lofting the plans, when I finally got up enough nerve to buy some real wood, when I finally got up enough nerve to actually cut that real wood, when I figured out how to mount Cabin Boys stem and transom (oh, bitter irony!), when I figure out how to cut the stem rabbet, when I finally learned how to spell rabbet, etc., etc.

I said it again just last week, when I had both garboard planks bedded and fastened. "That was the hump," I announced. "Everyone says the garboards are the hardest part. Its all down hill from here! Yahoo!"

And who can blame me? Spiling those garboards really was hard. Such a complex shape and such a demanding technique. The rest of the planks looked simple in comparison. A slam-dunk, as intelligent people used to say.

I should have known better!

On my first attempt at spiling the second plank, I was so confident that I ignored my own advice and tried to spile the hood end, rather than using a pattern.

The Chutzpah of Hope
photo jalmberg

I figured a little audacity was justified. Id already mastered the art of spiling, after all. Why keep making hood-end patterns if you could spile them, instead? It was worth a try, I figured.

The result? Disaster, of course. After unspiling the points I ended up with a pattern for the second plank that didnt fit at all. Not even close!

No problem, Id just do it again.

Second try, with humility...
photo jalmberg

The second time, I carefully cut out a hood-end pattern, and made extra, extra sure that the batten wasnt edge-set. The formula was simple:

Perfect Technique = Perfect Pattern

But again, after unspiling the points, the resulting pattern fit like an unruly banana, curving in the wrong direction. Clearly, I was doing something wrong, but what?

After a long session in my thinking chair, I decided that the problem must have something to do with the angle of the batten. My narrow battens lay directly on the forms, whereas the full-size pattern lay on the beveled garboard.

Shimming the spiling batten to the right angle
photo jalmberg

My first thought was to use a kind of shim to tilt the spiling batten to the right angle... But I lost faith in this approach even before finishing the shimming process. It was just too easy to twist the narrow luan plywood battens into the wrong shape. And once removed from the forms and laid flat on the pattern stock...

I was onto something with the shim idea, but the resulting shims + batten system was just too flimsy... I just knew it wasnt going to work...

But I suddenly knew what would work!

The secret to happy spiling -- wide battens!
photo jalmberg

I tossed the narrow spiling batten into my kindling box, and cut out the widest 3-part spiling batten that would fit between the lap lines.

This spiling batten was wide enough to lay on the garboard bevel, just like the plank would have to. So the batten would lay on the forms at the same angle as the plank would. This angle, I reasoned (hoped?), was vital to accurate spiling.

Well, there was only one way to find out...

The unspiled, cutout pattern for the second plank
photo jalmberg

Success! The unspiled pattern fit perfectly. It followed the laplines, both top and bottom, and lay flat on the forms, with no edge setting.

Phew!

Once you have an accurate pattern, the rest is simple.

Second plank, with gains cut
photo jalmberg

I traced the pattern onto my sheet of marine plywood, cut the plank out with a jigsaw, and remembered to cut the gains. I tried it on the forms, and it fit perfectly.

Suddenly, the three failed attempts at spiling this simple plank faded into distant memory. All that remained was that glorious, close fitting plank, glowing under the rich, warm basement lights. Was that a heavenly chorus singing its praises? Or a Pringles jingle on the TV? No matter...

With the second row of planks screwed and glued, I climbed up the stairs and found Helena behind her piano.

"Im finally over the hump," I mentioned casually. "Its all down hill from here."

"Yahoo!" she said, with a smile.

Australian Bark Craft Canoes and Otherwise

A few weeks ago I presented material from Edwin Doran on the bark canoes of Australia. I can now elaborate on that a bit, based on images from Paul Johnstones The Sea-Craft of Prehistory.

Dorans line drawing of an Australian canoe that was built by bunching and tying the ends of a half-tube of bark was obviously based on this fine early 19th-century engraving, from Lesueur and Petits Atlas to Perons "Voyage of Discovery." (Ive transcribed the name of the source verbatim from Johnstones caption, but unfortunately, there is no bibliography or footnote citation for this source.) In the engraving, one can see thwarts, and ties (probably bark) running across the boat, from shear to shear just above the thwarts, , but no gunwale members, ribs, or other structure. The Aboriginal people paddling in the background provide scale, showing that this was a small two-man canoe indeed. They are paddling with single-handed paddles, and they have a small fire going amidships. In the background, a man is carrying a similar boat above his head. From the abundance of ducks and other waterfowl in the image, one can safely speculate that the canoes were used for waterfowling, egg collecting, or both.

My earlier blog included Dorans description of the bark rafts of Tasmania, which stated that they were extremely temporary craft, becoming waterlogged in about six hours. Heres an image, from the same source as the above image, by way of Johnstone.

As Johnstone notes, these are similar in design to bundled-reed floats that were used widely in many cultures around the world, the Peruvian caballito pictured just a couple posts ago being an example. But given their short working life, Johnstone seems justified in calling them among the most primitive of craft. I have no information on what material was used to bind them together, nor on the type of bark used in the bundles.

Again, the two paddlers in the background show that this is a very small tandem craft, and it doesnt look particularly stable either. They carry poles, but apparently no paddles, and a pair of poles appear in the foreground as well. As any modern canoe poler can attest, however, poles can serve entirely adequately to propel a boat in deep water, as their projected area under water is often not much less than that of a paddle blade.
