Luckily, you can download anything from the Internet, so I found the old user manual for the machine on the Singer site, sat down, and Read The Manual.
The machine needed a bit of cleaning, a good oiling, and a new drive belt, but once it was tuned up, and Id figured out how to thread the needle and bobbin, I was off and running. As my mother said, anyone can learn how to use a sewing machine in a few minutes, and she was right.

No way youd be able to pull the foam out of the cover, unless you had a big opening on the long side. If I ever need to remove the foam, Ill just take out the stitches on one side and re-sew.
Once the pieces were cut out, I marked the sewing lines on the inside, using what sewing people call chalk, but what I would call wax. I left plenty of border to work with. After sewing, I trimmed it back to about 1/2"
Then it was time to pin the pieces together and start sewing. This was pretty easy, at first...
Faster than I expected, I had all the seam sewn except for one on the short end, through which I intended to insert the foam.
Now, it would have been absolutely impossible to insert the foam full size. Id cut the cover for a fairly snug fit, and the friction between the dacron cover and the inside of the vinyl was fierce.
If I hadnt thought of a trick, I would have left the long side open, which is probably what the commercial companies do.
However, while trying to figure out how to get the foam inside, I remembered something called Swedish Furling. I guess this is a knot the Swedes use to tie their furled sails up. (Im of Swedish ancestry, but this is one fact that wasnt passed down from my great grandfather, so Im assuming.)

Its hard to tell from the picture, but the foam is probably furled by about 30%. That makes the foam small enough to slide into the cover easily.

Yesterday I posted links to online boat-related discussion forums I like to read. The Wooden Boat forum, associated with the magazine, Wooden Boat was at the top of the list. This forum is full of informative posts related to wooden boat building. On the forum youll find builders of just about every kind of boat imaginable that can be made of wood, from the modern composite racing craft to replicas of tried and true working vessels of the last and prior centuries.
With so many builders of different boats, disagreement is bound to emerge, and when the subject of epoxy comes up this is always the case. I take an interest in these discussions about epoxy, because so much of my boatbuilding and other woodworking depends on it. I first started using it for laminating wood around 1991, when I began building my own double-bladed kayak paddles out of red cedar, ash, and mahogany. The paddle shafts and blades were constructed by gluing together many layers of thin strips of these materials sawn on the tablesaw and then glued up into a block roughly the dimensions of a paddle. Shaping was done with various power and hand tools, and after hours of hard work a fine paddle with feathered blades offset to 90 degrees was the result. I used these paddles for hundreds of miles of kayak touring, and never had a failure.
My next test of epoxy as an adhesive was in 1993-94, when I took an interest in traditional archery and began making wooden longbows, many of them laminated with a layer of planed bamboo on the back, which is the high tension side away from the shooter. I built several bows like this with draw weights of up to 80 pounds. If there was ever a test of an adhesive, the rigorous tension and compression cycles that a glue line is put through when a bow is drawn and then suddenly released is among the most extreme. Like the paddles, I never had a failure of an epoxy glue joint in any of my bows.
From paddles and bows I went on into wooden boat building, beginning with a 19-foot woodstrip canoe that eventually evolved into a decked sailing trimaran canoe with two 15-foot woodstrip outriggers. This type of construction depends on a layer of 6-oz. fiberglass cloth laminated on both the interior and exterior of the hull to reinforce the wooden shell, which is made of red cedar and cypress strips only 1/4 inch thick. In this construction there are no internal frames or ribs to hold the hull in shape or to strengthen it - only the epoxy saturated fiberglass. The result is a stiff, lightweight hull that never leaks or loses its shape. This first canoe I built, Seldom Seen, is as structurally sound and beautiful today as it was when I launched it in 1995.
I could go from here, describing everything Ive built with epoxy since, from wooden bathroom showers to more than a dozen stitch and glue plywood boats. Suffice to say, Im a believer in epoxy. Modern epoxy resins make it possible for those of us willing to experiment to create incredible composite structures using wood, the most beautiful of all natural materials, in ways never imagined before. Those woodworkers and boatbuilders unwilling to use it out of some resistance to modern technology have no idea what theyre missing.

This was started by someone who read a dire warning in one of Larry Pardeys books about the use of epoxy as an adhesive in wooden boat building. Most anyone who has had an interest in sailboat cruising has heard of Lin and Larry Pardey, the famous cruising couple who built their 24-foot Lyle Hess designed wooden cutter, Serafynn by themselves and then circumnavigated in her. They later built a 29-foot version of the same type of heavy monohull cutter which they named Taleisin. The couple has rounded Cape Horn and made many ocean voyages on this boat as well, and theyve written of their exploits in many books and countless magazine articles. Their experience gives them great credibility among all of us who sail and build boats. But the Pardeys interest in boats is focused on heavy, traditional wood construction using traditional methods that predate the development of materials like epoxy resins and fiberglass cloth. These methods are just as valid today as they were a century ago, but their validity does not change the fact that modern technology can also produce sound boatbuilding methods. The problems seem to arise when someone attempts to misuse a new technology, by combining it with an older method that was never intended to depend on such a modern adhesive. The Pardeys distrust of epoxy stems from seeing failures of it when applied improperly in this type of heavy, traditional wooden boat construction.
In this older method of boatbuilding, youre dealing with larger, heavier timbers that make up the hull components. These designs depend on precise carpentry joints reinforced with fasteners to keep them in place. More massive pieces of wood expand and contract to a greater degree when going through cycles of wet and dry and hot and cold. And the wood components of these traditional hulls are subject to this expansion and contraction because such hulls by design are not waterproof without caulking between the hull planks. Its the old basket vs. wooden bowl analogy, in that the basket (traditional wooden boat hull) depends on swelling to keep it watertight. Haul a planked wooden boat like this out of the water for an extended period of time and the planking will shrink, leaving gaps in the joints. In order to float, this type of hull depends on swelling of the wood and the individual parts must work independently; hence the need for fasteners that hold them in place during this cycling. Most any glue, including epoxy, will fail if used in an attempt to join large timbers subjected to this kind of cycling.
This is the reason modern wooden boats designed for epoxy construction are built in a completely different way. Scantlings and joinery methods are optimized for the use of epoxy as an adhesive if the designer understands the material. This is how the modern epoxy composite boat resembles the laminated wooden bowl, as opposed to the woven basket. The hull is made up of smaller parts that do not move independently, but instead are rigidly joined together to form a monocoque structure. In most designs using this type of construction, the hulls are further sealed and waterproofed by a laminated sheathing of fiberglass over the exterior. Water does not penetrate to the wood and there is no possibility of swelling due to water intrusion. The hull will be stable and stay the same whether the boat is in or out of the water.
So the bottom line is that if used as it is intended, epoxy as an adhesive and a laminating resin is without equal. The problem arises when someone tries to use it in a way that is less than optimum, such as in traditional boat construction, inviting failure and causing them to believe that the epoxy is at fault. If you want to build a modern wood-epoxy composite boat to a proven design, dont be discouraged by these naysayers. Epoxy is incredible stuff and I have absolute faith in it. Just look at the hundreds, if not thousands of boat designs that depend on it. Boats like Wharrams Tiki designs are engineered for epoxy construction and nothing else would work, nor could you build the boat as designed with any other type of glue. I have complete trust in the integrity of the Tiki 26 hulls I am putting together without metal fasteners of any type and I wont lose any sleep worrying about a glue failure when Im on a passage days away from the nearest land.

Fuel tanks
I have four fuel tanks on board of my trawler. Given this first sentence seems to sum things up I could be getting off easy in regard to this post and leave it at that. But since Im a little on the long winded side of this world, and the fact that Im totally into all things steel boats, I feel as if I should elaborate a little on my fuel tanks.
The four fuel tanks on board are integral tanks meaning they are now part of the hull. The tanks are on the outboard sides of the
hull in the engine room between station 9 @ 14. I am using the term station as this is how the prints describe frame locations, and these two locations are actually steel bulkheads. I framed the tanks using 1/4" plate. All the tanks have a baffle located @ 30" on center witch is also what the frame spacing is. The baffles have the corners clipped off of them and also have 2" holes in the center to let fuel flow freely between them. The baffles are welded on all four sides of the tank walls and by using the slug welding method I was able to weld the baffle to the tank top. All four tanks have a drain valve at the lowest point in the tank in case I ever have to empty the tanks completely.I could not in good conscience build thes
e four tanks without providing a way to get back inside of them if I ever have to. I added an inspection port between each baffle for future maintenance. The inspection covers are made of 3/8 plate and are attached to the tank by a 3/8 stud that is welded to the inside of the tank wall. The inspection ports are 12" in diameter and are in the front wall of the tank. Because of the size of the tanks, putting the inspection ports on the top of the tanks made no sense as it would serve little use due to the depth of the tank. Getting the inspection covers to pass the air test proved to be the most difficult part of building these tanks. Using fuel rated gasket material I cut a gasket for each cover and punched holes for the studs. I then used a fuel rated gasket sealant applied to the gasket to improve the seal of the gasket. Because I did not want to stretch my mounting studs I used a torque wrench to tighten the nuts to the correct torque for a 3/8 bolt. My first air test showed each stud to leak! Next I tried using a heavy thread sealant on the studs. My next air test showed the studs to leak! The problem was the weld holding the stud to the tank was not air tight and my 7 psi air test was leaking past this weld and then past the mounting nut. My solution to making the covers air tight was to mill a counter sink in each tank cover to accept an "O" ring for each stud. I milled the counter sink in the covers to a precise depth so that the washer under the nut would compress the fuel rated "O" ring and provide a seal once the nuts were torqued down. My next air test proved all the studs passed the 7 psi test. I spent another day or so finding pinhole leaks in the tanks and making weld repairs. The final air test was to have the tanks hold 7 psi for 24 hours.My two forward tanks ( port and starboard) hold 200 gallons each. The two aft tanks ( port and starboard) hold 500 gallons each. I intend to use one of the forward 200 gallon tanks for running the main engine and generator and the other three tanks will be used for storage. Ill have to transfer fuel from the various tanks via an electric fuel transfer pump. Ill probably use this same pump to polish my fuel from time to time to keep it clean and keep the condensation water out of the fuel. The total fuel capacity on board will be around 14oo gallons. This 1400 gallons is more than what the boat was designed for so I contacted the architect who designed the boat and reviewed this with him. Hal Wittacre ( the naval architect) did some stability calculations and recommended adding more ballast to the boat.
Each tank has a pick up tube for fuel supply and return. These pick up tubes go to within 1" of the tank bottoms. There is a fill point for both port and starboard on the aft deck of the boat. A two inch steel pipe will be used as the fill tube, with a vent that leads back to the fill port. The fill ports on the tanks just dump into the the top of the tank but I want to change that and add a tube that goes to the tank bottom. Bringing the fill tube to the tank bottom is a better design element for fuel tanks and I will make this change.
The fuel management system is fairly complex and really needs its own post to get into the details. Once I start work on this part of the fuel system Ill add a fuel management post.
The tanks are shown in these pictures with a plywood cover. I did this so that I could protect them during construction. Plywood will also be the final cover as there are many things that will be attached to this plywood.
